Location
- Tanks must be at least 7 metres from any livable structure
- Within 30 metres of an access point for maintenance and pumping
Drainage Fields
- Discharge directly into waterways is no longer permitted
- Drainage fields are now required for wastewater infiltration into soil
- Provides additional treatment before dispersal
Upgrading Non-Compliant Systems
- Direct watercourse discharge systems must now route through drainage fields
- Other options: connect to main sewer or install small sewage treatment plant
- Upgrades typically required within 12 months of identification
Property Transfers
- Buyers and sellers must agree who will upgrade non-compliant systems
- Required as a condition of sale in most cases
Drainage Field Requirements
- At least 10 metres from waterways
- 15 metres from buildings
- 50 metres from any water well
- Cannot be located near access roads or paved areas
Cesspit and Cesspool Regulations
Cesspits and cesspools collect wastewater like septic tanks but do not have an outlet or drainage system. Instead, they must be pumped out regularly to remove waste. Our certified installers follow all guidelines for properly siting and sizing these containment system:
- At least 7 metres from any livable building
- Within 30 metres of access point for maintenance
- 18,000 liters for 2 bedroom home (2 users)
- Add 6,800 liters per additional bedroom
*Base number on bedrooms, not residents
Formula: Bedrooms + 2 users
For example, a 3 bedroom home would need:
- 3 bedrooms + 2 users = 5 users
- 18,000L (2 users) + (3 extra users x 6,800L) = 38,400L total capacity
